Week 1 - Term 2 2017

Expectations

This week we started with a recap of what our expectations look like in 5A and also throughout the whole school, whether we are in the playground, on our lunch break, at a specialist lesson or if there is another teacher in the classroom.

Students were able to recognise our expectations - Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Resilient, Be Curious and Be Safe – and provide examples of what it looks like, sounds like and feels like.

Our Holidays

I love hearing stories from the students about what they got up to during their time off or even what they do on the weekend or afternoons. What is also great, is that the kids love hearing about my adventures and the events that I participate in. So coming back from a very action packed Easter Holiday, I was able to fill the kids in about my Bali trip, and then Round 2 of the Aussie Car Racing Series, where I help pitcrew for Madison Dunston. I informed my class about the struggle in packing for a summer holiday and at the same time, packing for a winter trip down in Tasmania.  


So to continue with our writing stamina, the students wrote their adventures in their writing books… the Cinemas got a good workout during the holidays.

Maths

This week in Maths we have been working on our division. We have watched some YouTube clips on how to work through short division and long division. Students have been grasping the understanding that knowing their Times Tables assists in understanding division.

We have continued with our Maths Mentals every day, which touches upon different Mathematical concepts that may not be taught in the week. This allows students to gain a wide range of knowledge and understanding in those areas even when we are focusing on a particular Maths concept in our Units of work. Students are then tested on the Friday to see if they have retained the learning.

We have also had another successful Friday morning ‘Times Table Challenge’ – The students stamina in answering the 50 questions is becoming more efficient and more consistent every time they sit down for the challenge.

I love the enthusiasm 5A has towards this Challenge. I also love writing out the Certificates each time anyone gets 50/50 – The next challenge awaits them…

English

We have kicked off our new English Unit of Work – Comprehending a Feature Article and Writing a multimodal feature article that expresses a point of view about an issue around Flying Foxes.

Other Activities

Our Health Unit about Healthy Habits is underway and we will be ‘Quenching’ our thirst in Design and Technologies after understanding Food Specialisations and preparations to design a drink for a specific purpose.

Students also had the opportunity to pick their top 3 Friday Afternoon Activities to participate in for the following 5 Friday afternoon weeks. It ranged from Gymnastics, Sick Beats, Rugby Union, Female Rugby League, Cricket, Tennis, Arts and Crafts, Cycling, Gardening and Boot Camp. I think it’s really amazing how our school allows the students to experience a wide variety of activities that they may not have the opportunity to experience… and Boot Camp is my forte!

I read that to Brodie and he said " Mum I never want to be sick or stay home on a Friday and give up my lead on the times tables challenge." ������ I didn't realise he was so competitive at school. At home he lets his little sister win on purpose all the time at things. Thanks for the blog and sharing the school week with us.

    1. Brodie is loving the Times Table Challenge. I have heard some kids say to him that he should be sick on a Friday... LOL. I did laugh at that. I believe he will never give up his spot.
