Week 4 - Term 2

Our first week this term with 5 days!!!

Jai - Week 4 Student of the Week
Student of the Week
Well done to Jai who received our student of the week for Week 4 this term. Keep up the great work champ.

Attendance
Another big attendance from 5A this week. Lots of information being embedded into our brains for the weeks ahead.
Week 4 Perfect Attendance Students

English
We had a look at language features in our Toad article this week. Substitute words were used to explain the Toad instead of saying toad, toad, toad… poisonous pest sounds a little more relevant.

Science
This week we started looking at the different and standard household items that we use every day that were created for space use. We will be looking at these a little further and understand why they were made.

Other Activities
NAPLAN
Every student in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 in Queensland sat NAPLAN on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Our Year 5’s completed the Language Conventions test which consisted of spelling, grammar and punctuation, and a writing task. They also had to complete a reading comprehension test and a Numeracy test. I was very proud of how all our students in 5A handled the test conditions and the understanding of the allowing other students to have their chance to continue working on their tests even when they were finished. Their test ethic should be applauded.
NAPLAN classroom set up
A new craze has approached us….

Fidget Spinners” … not too sure how long this will stay for, or whether it is just a fade.
Fidget Spinners.... will it stay???

Term 2 - Week 3

Another 4 day school week!!!!

English
During English this week, students had a look at the structure of a feature article, we also recapped what Text Features were used in our ‘Ruthless March of the Toxic Invader’ feature article. Students had a look at more positive and negative language that is used in feature articles to influence their intended audience.

Maths
We have reached level ‘L’ in the Times Table Challenge this week. Students are working really hard to try and reach the 50 out of 50 to get to the next level. Students sat their Number Crunch Mathematics test this week. They had to sit and crunch out numbers for division, multiplication, word problems and fractions.

Attendance
Another big attendance from 5A this week. Lots of information being embedded into our brains for the weeks ahead.

Other Activities
During Boot Camp this week, our students had a go at the Beep Test. The Year 4 and 5 students ran it together and reached a top score level of 6.5 and then our Year 6 students gave it a go. I attempted the Beep Test with the Year 6 students, it wasn’t my best effort, but I survived at a level 6.6. There were two other students who reached over level 8. Very impressive.

Students also had the opportunity to complete their Health Assessment on Wednesday explaining why a healthy habit is good and how to continue the healthy habit when they get older. We had access to the computer lab for 5A to research and answer these questions.

Not sure how next week is going to pan out with this 5 day week about to happen in Week 4. Three weeks in a row with only 4 school days in each… You can kind of get used to it.

Term 2 - Week 2 2017

ANZAC Day Parade
During the ANZAC Day Parade first thing in the morning, 5A represented Currajong SS with respect and curiosity. Patrick and Jayden placed the wreath at the memorial stone. They did a great job along with all the other students who participated in the event. Patrick, Lachlan, Eli and Jayden also participated in the ANZAC Day March on the 25th of April. They made our school and myself proud.

English
We have started to look at our comprehension feature article, ‘Ruthless March of the Toxic Invader’. We have identified that a lot of the students are afraid of toads. The picture however, is a very disgustingly close-up of a toad. The students have had to explain the influence of where article writers place their images and how much they influence the audience to get a positive or negative reaction.

Maths
We have continued looking at long and short division in preparation for our Maths Test – Number Crunch. Students are also excelling in their Times Table Challenge with plenty more certificates written out. I have created a progress bar graph for the students to see where they are up to and how far they have to go to get to the end. I think a visit to the printer room is required for more certificates to be created.
Perfect Attendance Certificate
Attendance
Every week if a student is at school for all required days or even participating in a school event, they receive a ‘Perfect Attendance’ certificate. Every Day Counts – the more time they are at school, the more information they will be absorbing.

Other Activities

Our Friday Afternoon Activities have started. Students who are involved in the Boot Camp with me have started a base line of where their fitness level is up to. They were to show us how many burpees, push ups, and sit ups they can do, and how long they can hold a plank for. All the students did a great job. Hopefully they were a little tired Friday night.

Students also had the opportunity to complete their Health Assessment on Wednesday explaining why a healthy habit is good and how to continue the healthy habit when they get older. We had access to the computer lab for 5A to research and answer these questions.
